CHANGES ARE COMING TO CALIFORNIA EBIKE CLASSIFICATIONS STARTING JANUARY 1, 2026

CHANGES ARE COMING TO CALIFORNIA EBIKE CLASSIFICATIONS STARTING JANUARY 1, 2026

If you ride ebikes in San Diego or use electric bike rentals around the Encinitas area, you should be aware of the new ebike changes coming soon in California. Let’s go over the changes beginning January 2026.

Class 1 ebikes – no throttle and maximum speed remains at 20mph

Class 2 electric bikes – This class does allow a throttle with a maximum speed of 20mph.

Class 3 ebike – This class is where the changes occur. Beginning January 1st, 2026, all class 3 bikes sold in California cannot have a throttle. Top speed remains at 28mph.

The new legislation puts some teeth in what many bikes call “offroad” settings that allow the bike to exceed 28mph. These settings will not be legal. Also, the law does not allow any devise (throttle) to be provided that can be connected to a class 3 bike as an after sale item.

The bottom line here is that if you want a class 3 bike with a throttle, you should purchase it before January 1, 2026. We have many models to choose from so if you live in Solana Beach, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, San Diego or Carlsbad you should stop by for a test ride. Year end sales are on now until the end of the year.

If you have been using ebike or electric bike rentals in Encinitas or anywhere in our San Diego area, now is the time to consider purchasing a new ebike before year end. We offer zero percent financing for 12 or 18 months on most models even on electric bikes that are on sale.

Right now, all “large” size Abus and Bern helmets are 25% off until the end of October. If you want to accessorize your new ebike, and who doesn’t want to customize their bike, we offer free installation and discount prices on all your favorite accessories. When it comes to San Diego electric bikes, we offer the best selection of electric bikes, best financing, accessories, service and ebike rentals in all of San Diego including North County San Diego.

Come on down and ride some bikes or rent bikes today!
